Hidden in Fields of Gold

Over the last four years, I have been running the national trails across the UK, seeking to capture the unseen beauty accessible only by foot. This project, undertaken in July 2022, focuses on the West Fleet section of the 630-mile South West Coast Path, marking my first venture into visually documenting these journeys. The landscape here is steeped in history, dotted with wartime bunkers and hideouts, a stark contrast to the serene natural beauty. My aim was to capture the vibrant skies, golden fields, and the occasional burst of colour from lone flowers, which are symbols of resilience amidst the remnants of conflict.

As I embraced the solitude of the trail, supported only by the sounds of tractors and the calls of local wildlife, I used natural light and minimal equipment to preserve the authenticity of what I saw. This approach was crucial for conveying the raw, untouched essence of the landscape. During the two days I spent on this stretch, I encountered only one other soul, underscoring the profound isolation and untouched beauty of the path.

This project is not just a collection of images, it is a narrative of endurance, solitude, and the unexpected companionship of nature itself, echoing the distant yet persistent traces of human history.

Drifting into the Evening

Escaping the bustle of London, my partner and I retreated to a secluded hotel in Weymouth, a converted milking parlour by the sea, in May 2023. This project, 'Drifting into the Evening,' was born spontaneously as I was captivated by the serene dance of small, well-kept fishing boats bobbing to the rhythm of the breeze.

The evening light transformed the seascape, illuminating the boats and water in a way that demanded to be captured.

Using only minimal equipment and relying on the natural light, I sought to preserve the authenticity of the moment. This was my first attempt where I felt truly satisfied with how I captured the sunset, reflecting the tranquil life along this deserted shore. The photographs, while not flawless, honestly represent the local life and the quiet beauty of the place.

This project not only marks a significant moment in my photographic journey but also serves as a vivid reminder of the peaceful simplicity that nature holds, far from city life.

Gloomy Skies, Silent Reflection

From the pervasive grey skies of my childhood in Ireland, I developed a deep appreciation for the dramatic interplay of light and shadow that precedes a rainstorm. This fascination is at the heart of this project, where I explore the stark contrast between the silhouettes of buildings and crosses against the looming promise of rain-laden skies. The grey expanses not only underscore the vivid contours of the structures but also reflect the imminent burst of life-giving rain that makes the Irish landscape so vibrantly green.

This collection is a curated selection from years of capturing such moments, focusing specifically on crosses and architectural forms that stand boldly against the grey palette of the sky. Each photograph, taken with natural light and minimal equipment, remains unedited to preserve the authentic intensity and mood of the scene.

This project, while modest in size, is expansive in its thematic exploration, highlighting how seemingly mundane elements can coalesce into a profound visual narrative. Through these images, I aim to convey not just the aesthetic interplay of contrasts, but also a deeper appreciation for the brooding beauty that so often characterises the Irish heavens.

Along the Way

Ah, the Pennine Way — a 258-mile stretch of rugged, breathtaking landscapes that captivate the heart of any adventurer. Since falling in love with this trail and its starting point, Edale, in June 2022, I have returned several times a year, capturing its transformation through the seasons. This project presents a select collection from spring and summer over the past three years, showcasing the vivid contrast between the ancient stone walls and houses and the lush greenery of the fields and trees. Despite their beauty, these elements belie the tough, demanding nature of one of the UK's most challenging trails.

Each photograph has been taken with natural light and minimal equipment, adhering to my commitment to capture the true essence of the landscape without alteration. This approach not only ensures the authenticity of the images but also reflects the raw, unmediated experience of hiking the trail. The simplicity of my technique allows the natural beauty and harsh realities of the Pennine Way to speak for themselves, inviting viewers to experience the serene yet stark contrasts that define this iconic route.

Through this project, I aim to convey not just the visual beauty of the Pennine Way but also the emotional resonance of returning to a place that continues to inspire awe and respect with each visit.
